Hair Crush: Zooey Deschanel

Bangs are Back!

This week’s hair crush really began as a nod to the staggeringly sweet and quirky Zooey Deschanel. With voluminous dark brown locks and baby blue eyes, I’m sure we’re not the only ones who’ve developed a little crush.

However, the most iconic part of the Zooey Deschanel look, would have to be her fringe.  Thicker than most and with longer wisps on the side to frame her face; this look does everything to highlight her best features, namely her eyes and porcelain skin. But it would appear that Zooey is not the only one who has taken on the fringe.

Alexa Chung
rocks a less structured fringe, with a side part – complementing her hipster-style and identifiable red lipstick look. By contrast, Marion Cotillard dares to be different, with a short, messy fringe. Emma Stone also demonstrates that a more structured fringe can provide maturity and elegance to one’s look.

Whatever the case, make sure you choose a fringe that best shapes your face:
  • For square faces, long eye-grazing bangs that are tapered on the sides add a soft element
  • For round faces, a gently arching fringe can complement soft features, however, make sure bangs are thicker so as to not make a round face appear even fuller
  • For heart-shaped faces, try side swept bangs that will have a balancing effect in drawing attention down to your eyes
  • If you have a small forehead, a sloping asymmetrical fringe will make a short forehead seem stronger and more pronounced
  • If you have a high forehead, swingy bangs are in order. The gradual angle opens and widens the face. These bangs should be cut thickly and will start behind your natural hairline
