Michelle Williams: Asymmetrical Bob

Bobbing along to the tune of her own drum

– she’s done it again!

Not afraid to ruffle a few feathers, Michelle Williams is no stranger to making herself vulnerable both on and off screen. From the role of a jilted wife in Brokeback Mountain, a sultry tortured Marilyn Monroe to a crushed shell of a woman in Blue Valentine, Michelle knows how to gage an emotional reaction. However, this courage seems to translate off screen as well, as she makes daring style changes, transforming her into an influential style icon.

It is this brave can-do attitude that has made her our current hair crush. Growing out of a pixie cut isn’t always easy, but with Michelle adopting the asymmetrical bob, it seems she has managed to anyway.

The asymmetrical bob originally came into vogue in the 1980s, matched with power outfits and the advent of the career woman. It has continued to evolve, with several celebrities rocking it with their own personal interpretation; Victoria Beckham, Keira Knightley and Rihanna, just to name a few.

Here are some tips, if you’re keen to make the plunge yourself:
  1. An asymmetrical bob looks best when it’s not cut into a blunt shape; use textured layers near the front to add movement and shape.
  2. If your face is round, have your hair cut so one side is longer than the other, this draws the eye downward, giving the impression of a longer visage.
  3. If your face is already long, keep the lengths on either side similar, but have your stylist create wispy layers on one side, leaving the other side more full.
